making art and freelancing

Whether it has been personal projects, or friends of friends reaching out for their own Custom Artwork, I find a creative solution for them. This venture started out with tassel earrings and soon evolved to comic inspired posters. As my confidence grew as well as my Instagram following clients began to reach out looking for something they themselves had envisioned but hadn’t seen. So began my ever growing list of products. Affirmation cards for a private retreat, a venue map for a wedding, a puzzle for a competition, a mug for a corporate Christmas gift, then came caps and tote bags as merchandise.

Moving home to reset and save money meant working 12 hour days on a grain site for Broadbent, Moree. The role involved collecting a sample of grain from incoming receival trucks, testing the half-liter sample for defectives, protein, moisture, impurities, and occasionally the falling numbers to determine what grade the grain makes. This grade therefore establishes how much the grower will make from selling their grain.

assistant ginner at LDC

The cotton ginning season usually runs from the end of April through to anywhere between August and December, depending on the harvest that year. The ginning process in its entirety, consists of at least 10-12 staff working non-stop 24 hours a day in 12-hour shifts. My role at LDC included unloading incoming module trucks to working as an assistant ginner in the control console.

The role of Assistant Ginner had me become an expert communicator and mediator, speaking mostly between the team that works in the gin and the managers. I assisted in mechanical maintenance and extinguished small fires all in an effort to keep the gin running smoothly. You would work 12-hour days, 6 days a week in cold winter weather. You relied on your senses to smell the slightest hint of smoke for burning cotton (which is disastrous) or perhaps you might hear over your ear muffs a peculiar sound of metal clanking or screeching that you didn’t otherwise hear.

ceci new york

In 2018 I moved to New York with all the dreams and possibilities one does, after watching “The Devil Wears Prada”. I was working at a cafe on a student visa after my study abroad when I was offered an interview at a luxury design and corporate branding company.

Starting as a production assistant I was slowly introduced to the crazy world of weddings and HUGE events. I proofed copy, addresses and quality checked printed stationery for hours on end. the more crafty activities included gluing pearls onto invites with tweezers and super glue, stamping wax seals and perfecting my ribbon tying.

After a year I became a production coordinator which involved a little more responsibility and organisation as well as prototyping new concepts for the design team. 2020 came and covid struck and as one can imagine, the events industry came to a screeching halt. then came the pivot to social media marketing. making the most of my passion for Instagram and love of wedding content, I was in charge of the Ceci New York account. Reaching out, networking and sourcing content from all of the vendors and clients we’d worked with and created a social plan and database of imagery.

Once we were back in the office my responsibilities picked up, I was assisting my manager with daily tasks and helped her interview and mentor new team members. collaborating a lot more with the other teams for brainstorming/ prototyping and carrying around the company client project list in my head. I played an instrumental role in team bonding and enforced the ritual of celebrations for birthdays and big events.

After being a HUGE fan of CJ Hendry’s for as long as I can remember I was so excited to be given the opportunity to work at 3 of her exhibitions and an installation.  Overall a 10/10 experience and would work every show ever if it was possible.
